SINGAPORE — “It was a timely reminder
that I should not take God’s wonderful
provision for granted.” This is the
enthusiastic response from one participant
in a Scripture distribution trip to Sri
Lanka organised by the Bible Society of
Singapore. And through a very different
initiative, the Bible Society is also supporting
Scripture distribution in another country
where, unlike Singapore, people do not
have easy access to God’s Word.
In collaboration with the Ceylon Bible Society,
a small group travelled from Singapore to
distribute 2,000 Bibles donated by Singaporeans
to Christian communities in the south of Sri
Lanka, including some still recovering from the
tsunami of 2004. Everywhere they went, the
participants encountered Christians who were
eager to learn more about God’s Word and to
have their own Bible.
Immense gratitude
“The villagers showed such immense gratitude
at finally being able to own a Bible,”
recalls one participant, Angelina Ong. “Their
hunger for spiritual growth through learning
about God’s Word was very evident in their
personal testimonies. It put me to shame because
I have several copies of different Bible
versions left on my bookshelf.”
“God is certainly working amazingly in Sri
Lanka!” adds another participant, Danny Lin.
“In those few days, he showed me the unity and
humility of churches of different denominations,
working together, serving the Lord as
one. This is something we Christians in Singapore
should learn and practise.”
Another initiative
Another initiative by the Bible Society of
Singapore is combining its desire to encourage
Singaporeans to interact with the Bible in different
ways with support for Bible distribution
in Cambodia. Through its The Bible in Colour
project, it is exhibiting at its offices 20 paintings
by local artist Larry James which interpret
the theme ‘Christ in the Ark of Redemption’.
Each painting is available to purchase for a
minimum donation of S$2,000 (US$1,317),
with the money raised going towards Bible
distribution in Cambodia. And in a further
gesture of solidarity with Christians in Cambodia,
the Bible Society is inviting people to sign
up for a field trip which will include a visit to a
literacy project which uses Bible-based teaching
materials.
