The fortune-teller who pointed the way to Jesus

Chen Juan, 24, is in her final year at the Anhui Theological Seminary and is enthusiastic about sharing God’s Word.

“Whenever I meet people who are interested in Christianity I have a strong urge to share my faith with them,” says Chen, whose aim in life is to become a pastor. It is hard to believe that just a few years ago she was deeply depressed and did not know what to do with her life – something that was triggered by a tragic event. “When I was 17 two of my close friends died,” she recalls sadly. “It was very hard for me – I retreated into myself and spent most of my time alone. I tried to keep up at school but I struggled to concentrate during classes. I later developed health problems but the doctors could not diagnose what was causing them. “My parents tried everything to help me get better, visiting various people and support groups. Eventually they went to a fortune-teller, who told them to find people who believed in Jesus. ‘Perhaps Jesus can help,’ he told them. “That is how I was put into contact with Christians, and, over time, they helped me to get to know Jesus. My health also improved tremendously but I still have to be careful. I became a Christian when I was 19. I had never read the Bible before and now I cannot stop reading it, especially as I study to become a pastor. The stories in the Bible have made a big impression on me and have inspired me to give my whole life to God.”
