Artist finds strength in Gods Word
By Tan Tan Yeo, Program Manager, China
Partnership CHINA Every day I look to God to remove all that is evil within me so that I can help others. I am very grateful to him. Zhang, a member of the Black Miao ethnic group, is an artist whose beautiful works enrich peoples lives. An active member of his local church, he also seeks to enrich others by sharing his faith. He still clearly remembers the time when he understood very little about Christianity. Zhang first encountered the Bible when he was working as an apprentice in a printing factory. Picking up a copy that had been given to his boss, he attempted to read it. For the most part, though, he found its contents incomprehensible. In 2001, the printing factorys business slumped and Zhang was forced to look for work elsewhere. He travelled to Yunnan Province, where, despite his artistic talents, he had no choice but to earn a living by polishing shoes at the roadside. He often waited for customers outside the local university. He gained a regular customer and they became friends. This man later introduced Zhang to other friends who in turn invited him to attend St Johns Church. He was baptised there in 2002. Church choirHe began singing in the church choir, but still did not really fully understand what it means to be a Christian. He often wondered why his life was so hard and why he had no hope for the future. In 2003, though, a friend taught him to read the Bible. Since then there has been no turning back. Now he owns a Bible that is very well-thumbed, with many verses highlighted. He has discovered that Gods Word is what he really needs to help him face each day. Like eating rice Reading the Bible is like eating rice, you have to take it every day, he says. If you dont, when you walk out, you will walk the wrong way.I have suffered and have walked through difficult journeys that others have not gone through. Gods Word gives me strength.
