‘Gritty urban drama’ brings
God’s Word to film audiences

ENGLAND AND WALES — A film which its director describes as “a gritty urban drama aiming to challenge Christians and non-Christians alike” is being made available to church groups by the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS) following a limited cinema release and showings at a number of film festivals.

Released

Norman Stone’s Man Dancin’ is set on a deprived housing estate in Glasgow and tells the story of Jimmy Kerrigan (played by Alex Ferns), who has just been released from prison and is now desperate to avoid returning to a life of crime. Through attending ‘anger management’ classes, he finds himself playing Jesus in a church passion play. With the help of Father Flynn (Tom Georgeson), he participates in the play with uncharacteristic enthusiasm. His actions have very significant repercussions within his community and the criminal fraternity, and allow the film to convey a “powerful Christian message” (according to one reviewer).

Visual arts

Continuing its strategy of bringing God’s Word to a wide audience through the visual arts (see World Report 392/19 and 393/3 for recent examples), BFBS is now offering Man Dancin’ on DVD in a special Church Edition which includes a Leaders’ Guide.
