Forgotten Bible

by Ma Tingting

PR CHINA — Twenty years ago my mother’s uncle gave her a Bible. She thanked him graciously but she was not interested in Christianity and put it on a shelf. She soon forgot she had a Bible.

Our family experienced hardship over the years that followed. We moved house 10 times and went through great sorrow and suffering. My mother’s heart was broken and she aged dramatically, but the three of us children were too young to help her mend her broken spirit.

Then a miracle happened: she heard the Gospel again and this time opened her heart. She became a Christian and was filled with peace and joy. Her long-forgotten smile reappeared and she was truly transformed. Although we were young, we saw this transformation and knew it must have come from God. We too became Christians and were blessed by God’s love and protection.

One day not so long ago, my mother was tidying the house and came across the Bible her uncle had given her 20 years ago. It’s still the same old Bible, but now we see it in a different light: this forgotten Bible reminded us that though we may forget the immense grace of God, he never leaves or forsakes us.
