‘I want to pay back what I stole’

SAN JOSÉ, Costa Rica — One day a man came into the bookshop of the Bible Society of Costa Rica, which at that time was located in the city centre. He went straight to the sales person on duty and asked how much a Bible cost.

When he was told the price – about US$5 – he reached into his wallet and took out some money to pay.

“Would you like me to wrap the Bible up for you?” the sales person asked.
“No, I am not taking a Bible out of this shop with me,” replied the man. “A year ago I stole one from you, planning to sell it, but nobody would buy it. So I started reading it myself. It changed my life completely and now I want to pay back what I stole.” (WR 387/23 - 8/9.04)
