Bringing the Bible alive in schools
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica Reaching the children and young people of Costa Rica with the message of the Bible is a priority for the Bible Society. And it knows that in order to do this, it must present the Bible in an attractive and relevant way that will help children relate it to their own experiences of life.
That is why the Society has produced an array of colourful and eye-catching posters dealing with moral and ethical issues facing children today. These are hanging in the corridors and classrooms of schools across the country and are used alongside other Bible Society products to teach children about the Bible (see World Report 367/22). In the Colegio Monterrey, an evangelical school in San José, 12- and 13-year-old students walk down corridors lined with bright Scripture posters on their way to watch a Bible Society video called Know Your Bible. The video is part of a series consisting of 13 five-minute episodes designed to stimulate discussion about the Bible its origins, its message and its relevance to modern life. So far, the Bible Society has produced two series of 13 episodes, with two more series in the pipeline. As well as being shown in schools, the series have been broadcast on national television, receiving a very warm response from viewers who have said that it has helped them in their personal Bible study. As well as watching the Know your Bible video, today the children also watch a film about the Reina-Valera Spanish Bible, which was translated in the 1500s during the Reformation. It is not just the children who are learning
from these videos and other Scripture resources their teachers,
too, are being impacted by the schools emphasis on the Bible.
Although not all the teachers are Christians, Bible study sessions are
held for teachers each morning from 6.30 to 7.30am. In this way, many
non-Christian teachers have become believers. (WR 386/7 - 6/7.04) |
