The tracks of Birkenau RailwayDuring our time in Poland, we visited Auschwitz in the south, writes Liz Martin, Development Coordinator of the British and Foreign Bible Society. It is a place primarily associated with the
massacre of Jews and was also the scene of atrocities against thousands
of non-Jewish Poles. The area around Auschwitz was almost completely
cleared of its Polish inhabitants, many of whom were sent to concentration
camps in Germany. It is therefore unsurprising that Auschwitz has had
a profound impact on the psyche and spirituality of the Polish nation.
