USA — Responding to the great popularity of magazines among teenage girls, publishing house Thomas Nelson Bibles launched Revolve, a publication which combines the New Testament, study notes and features typical of mainstream magazines for teenagers, in July. With the first print run of 40,000 copies having sold very quickly through Christian bookshops, the potential of the ‘biblezine’ format for bringing the Scriptures to teenagers was clearly confirmed and Thomas Nelson is now selling further copies through mainstream retailers.

Superficially, Revolve differs little from ordinary teenage magazines. It has the usual dating tips, pop music gossip, quizzes and fashion secrets, but closer reading reveals that all these are written from a biblical perspective. Furthermore, the magazine contains the New Century Version text of the New Testament and extensive Bible study notes.

Thomas Nelson is hoping that this approach will “make the Word of God exciting, relevant and fun for young women again,” according to Kate Etue, Senior Editor of the firm’s Transit teenage brand. The response has certainly been encouraging so far, and there are now plans to launch an edition for teenage boys next year. (WR 382/WW1 - 12.03)
