RUSSIA — Children at the School for the Deaf and Blind in Sergiev Posad, a town an hour’s drive from Moscow, recently became the first recipients of two historic Scripture publications in Braille. The Children’s Bible and Bible Stories for Young Children are the first Scriptures for children ever to be published in Braille in Russia.

The children and their teachers were delighted when the Bible Society in Russia delivered the brand-new books to the school. Sergei, who graduated from the school a few years ago, is now teaching the next generation of students to read Braille. He examined the new books and smiled.

“These are great, just what we need,” he said. “The children here will easily understand them.”

The new Scripture will prove a valuable resource in the school – the only one in the country which teaches and houses children who are all both deaf and blind. Its 142 residents are aged between 18 months and 24 years, and many do not have families. The school teaches them to be self-sufficient and even helps them find work when they graduate.

More than 100 other educational institutions for the blind and visually-impaired will also receive copies through the Bible Society’s project, In the Light of the Lord, which aims to reach at least 12,000 blind children. The project was also an unprecedented fundraising success for the Bible Society, with donors covering all direct expenses. e-249 (WR 379/9 - 9.03)

Living in a world of silence and darkness, younger and older children at the School for the Deaf and Blind in Sergiev Posad now have access to a message of light and hope through the first children’s Braille Scriptures to be published in Russia.
