New vehicles take Bibles into all parts
of Malawi

BLANTYRE, Malawi — In the December Newsletter of the UBS Southern African Regional Service Center, the Bible Society of Malawi reported that its distribution of Bibles had improved tremendously since the purchase of three vehicles provided under the terms of Opportunity 21.

The vehicles, a Nissan and two Isuzus, were purchased with funds provided in the latter part of 2000 by the Scottish Bible Society which had come from a legacy from a supporter in the west of Scotland (see Special Report 29/15).

The first vehicle was in use by early 2001 (see World Report 371/3) and the others were added later that year. “They carry out all planned distribution programs without leaving out any place due to poor road infrastructure,” said the report. “They can reach all places in the country with God’s precious Word.”

Subsequently the Scottish Bible Society challenged its supporters to fund more Scriptures for the vehicles to carry. The response, according to its Annual Review for 2001, amounted to more than £76,000 (approximately US$120,000) which supplied some 20,000 Bibles, 6,000 New Testaments and 4,500 Scripture cassettes in local languages.
