Bible Society in Swaziland collaborates
to reach famine victims

MANZINI, Swaziland — The Bible Society in Swaziland is adopting a collaborative approach as it responds to the famine which has swept across most of Southern Africa. In Swaziland itself, more than 153,000 people are facing severe food shortages.

The Society is to work with World Vision and the Lutheran Development Service. The immediate needs are practical, and Society staff are donating clothing and money to buy food. The Society is also producing Selections designed to encourage Christians to send donations, and funds raised in this way will be used to purchase more food, especially in early 2003 before the next maize harvest. There are also plans to fund the purchase of cassette players and Faith Comes By Hearing audio Scriptures, allowing listening groups to be set up at food distribution centres.

Sphiwe Ngwenya, the Society’s Executive Secretary, has requested prayer support, especially for community-based field workers and for work with partner organisations. (WR 374/37 - 2.03) e-221 November 14, 2002
