SCOTLAND — The use of popular films to explain the Bible to a world steeped in popular culture was discussed at a conference held in November by the Scottish Bible Society. The Rev Gene McAfee, former lecturer on film and religion at Harvard, talked about Pulp Fiction. “Rather than make film fit into pre-defined categories, I ask, ‘What do the great films tell us about fundamental religious questions?’” he said. Pulp Fiction, he added, though violent and filthy, was “a very good instructional film.” Matt Mueller, editor of Total Film magazine, said that he thought the film’s director, Quentin Tarantino, would approve of the discussion of the film in a religious context. “The film does contain ideas of biblical redemption,” he said. The conference was “a very interesting way of getting people involved with the Bible,” he added. (WR 373/WW1 - 12.02/01.03) (WR 372/WW1 - 11.02)
