Bibles unsold as Malawians face stark choices

BLANTYRE, Malawi — The Bible Society of Malawi believes that the government is underestimating the number of people facing starvation as a result of insufficient agricultural output. The government has stated that around three million people require food aid between now and the harvest in March-June 2003, but the Bible Society feels that many more people could be affected. People have no surplus food to sell, and this means that they have no money to buy Scriptures from the Society’s distribution partners. In response, the Society is hoping to link with the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian – Nkhoma Synod to raise funds in order to offer its main vernacular Bible at a reduced price.
