ABS wins award and produces children’s collection

NEW YORK, United States — An initiative by the American Bible Society (ABS) has received recognition in the form of an award from the Catechetical Office of the Archdiocese of New York.

The Society’s close collaboration with the archdiocese in supplying Bibles and Scripture materials for a range of programs, including distributing the God is our Shelter and Strength Portions to churches following the September 11, 2001, attacks (see Latest News #163), has led to it receiving a Good Shepherd Award. This was presented by Sister Joan Curtin, the director of the archdiocesan catechetical office, who praised the Society for its “tremendous outreach to the religious education programs in the archdiocese”.

Another collaborative project undertaken by ABS is its work with Metro Ministries, which works with inner-city children and runs the largest Sunday School in the US, to produce a children’s collection of Bible stories. The collection, entitled Bible Now! 101 Amazing Stories for Today’s Young Readers, is aimed at children aged between four and 10.

It makes extensive use of pictures to help children’s understanding and has features including colourful maps, illustrated timelines and lists of biblical words and characters. The text is based on the Contemporary English Version, which is easy to read and effective in helping children engage with the Scriptures. (WR 370/13 - 9.02)
