UBS appeals to Fellowship to pledge gifts to Argentine Bible Society

READING, England — The Argentine Bible Society (SBA), struggling with the effects of the collapse in the country’s economy, is to receive a short-term loan of US$85,000 from UBS to help it maintain essential services. Simon Strachan, UBS Senior Coordinator of Management Services, said repayment of the loan would add to the already formidable challenges facing the Society. “UBS is, therefore, appealing to member Societies to pledge gifts to Argentina that will enable the loan to become a gift,” he said.

In addition to this loan, UBS is funding a distribution of 160,000 Scriptures free of charge to churches which, according to Juan Terranova, SBA Deputy General Secretary, lack the Scriptures they need to minister to the many people who have lost hope. “The churches are waking up to a hard reality - many of their members are jobless and their offerings have decreased significantly,” he explained. “As a result, the churches do not have any money to buy Scripture materials and yet it is only the Word of God that can bring hope to those who have lost it.”

The distribution program, which will cost US$86,550, is to be funded by UBS through its Rapid Response Reserve. In both cases, UBS is appealing to Bible Societies to send donations to Simon Strachan, Senior Coordinator, Management Services, at the UBS World Service Center.
