Plans for Scripture distribution in Honduras, Nicaragua, and Cuba
following Hurricane Michelle

MIAMI, USA — The Bible Societies of Honduras and Nicaragua are to distribute Scriptures to the hundreds of thousands of people left homeless by flooding caused by Hurricane Michelle.

The news came on November 7 from Marco Herrera, Regional Secretary of the UBS Central America Region, who had at that time been unable to contact the UBS’s partners in Cuba, the Cuba Bible Commission. Cuba has been badly damaged by the hurricane, which tore across the island in the first days of November, leaving five people dead, destroying tens of thousands of homes and ruining crops.

It also caused extensive damage to the island’s electricity infrastructure and left many communities unreachable by car or telephone. “I am sure that we will develop a special Scripture distribution program in that country,” said Mr Herrera.

The hurricane also caused widespread damage in Honduras, Jamaica and Nicaragua. “The Bible Societies of Honduras and Nicaragua are organising an outreach together with local churches,” said Mr Herrera. “They will use Scriptures from existing stocks. The first part of the program is to replace the Bibles of pastors in the affected areas, and then to distribute Scripture Portions, offering people hope and peace.” (WR 365/7 - 12.01) e-169
