UNITED STATES — Although 63 per cent of Americans feel that the Bible answers all or most of the basic questions of life, a third of this group of believers never even reads the Bible, according to a recent Gallup poll. The poll shows Americans deeply divided in their approaches to the Bible, with half reading the Good Book at least once a month and 40 per cent hardly ever cracking the spine. Women, older Americans, non-whites, Republicans and political conservatives are the most likely to be found reading the Bible every week.

Nor is there much agreement about favourite books of the Bible. Psalms tops the list but it received praise from only 13 per cent of Americans. The second favourite is Genesis (nine per cent), followed by the Gospel of Matthew (seven per cent), the Gospel of John and the Book of Revelation (six per cent each). Curiously, a small portion of Americans (less than one per cent) voted for a book that Bible Review has never even heard of: the Book (or is it a Gospel?) of Joseph.
