Twenty-five year collaboration
produces Cree New Testament
MISTISSINI, Canada
A translation of the New Testament into the James Bay Cree dialect,
the fruit of 25 years work, was launched in eastern Canada at the
end of June. The James Bay Cree live along the east coast of James Bay
and number about 7,500. The three partners in the translation project
were the Canadian Bible Society (CBS), the
Cree community and Wycliffe Bible Translators.
Louise Blacksmith, a member of the translation team for 10 years, said,
Having [the Bible] in our own language is really going to make a
big difference in the lives of everyone here. Addressing the gathering,
Hart Wiens, the CBS Director of Scripture Translation, said, Today
the Word of God comes in the Cree language. May it find a home in your
