Troubled Jamaica needs prayers for peaceKINGSTON, Jamaica Following recent gun battles in Kingston, Jamaica, the Rev Courtney Stewart, the General Secretary of the Bible Society of the West Indies, has said that prayers are needed for a sense of peace and calm to be restored. At least 28 people were killed and dozens more injured in gun battles which broke out in a poor area of the capital, Kingston, over the weekend of July 7-8. The dead included two police officers and a soldier. The Bible Society had to close down on the Monday, said Mr Stewart, who said he could hear gunfire from his house. He added that while peace had returned, it was a lull in the turmoil that continues to seethe. (WR 362/28 - 09.01) e-157 |
