New home owners given free Bibles
as Zimbabwe economy weakens

HARARE, Zimbabwe — In the midst of growing political and economic instability, the Bible Society of Zimbabwe (BSZ) is continuing to provide free Bibles for each new home built by Habitat for Humanity Zimbabwe (HFHZ) – an ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to providing simple, decent shelter for people in need.

Hundreds of low-income families have received Bibles through this partnership since 1996 when HFHZ was first established, and many more will be needed as the organisation increases its building program across the country despite Zimbabwe’s steadily weakening economy.

Demand

About 120 houses were planned for this year but an additional 120 to 150 will be built to meet demand.

The completed houses are handed over at dedication ceremonies, attended by the BSZ. New home owners are invited to come forward and receive their free Bible.

“Since 1996, the Bible Society has donated over 400 Bibles in Shona and Ndebele to homeowners in Mashonaland and Matabeleland,” wrote a representative of HFHZ in a recent letter of thanks to the BSZ. “The home owners have been able to read through the Scriptures in their own language. Many feel very highly honoured and they are grateful for your love through the Bibles.”

No profit

Habitat houses are sold to low-income families at no profit and with no interest charged on the mortgage. They are built by the people who will live in them, with the help of volunteers. Trained builders oversee the projects, and individuals, businesses, church and para-church organisations and others provide financial support.

In Zimbabwe, where inflation has soared to more than 70 per cent, and where more than 50 per cent of the population is unemployed, Habitat houses are highly sought-after. HFHZ selects families who apply to join the scheme on the basis of their need and on their willingness and ability to repay the loan for their house. Despite the desperate situation in Zimbabwe, 85 per cent of HFHZ families have continued to meet the monthly repayments.

HFHZ is part of Habitat for Humanity International, an organisation founded in 1976 and operating in 79 countries. (WR 362/14 - 9.01) [PHOTOS]
