Bible Society in relief efforts after Philippines volcano and typhoonMANILA, Philippines The Philippine Bible Society (PBS) has distributed thousands of Scriptures to victims of two natural disasters which hit the country in June. Following the eruption of Mount Mayon on June 24, which forced 50,000 people to flee their homes, the PBS distributed more than 4,000 Scriptures through a relief program set up by FEBA Radio. Volunteers from the navy and local churches distributed material relief and provided medical and spiritual counselling. The Bible Society also recently visited Alcalca in the northern Philippines, which was devastated in late June by typhoon Utor. One million people in 20 provinces have been affected by the storm, which killed more than 120 people and destroyed or damaged thousands of homes. In co-operation with the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches, the PBS distributed more than 3,000 Scriptures to 500 families sheltering in rescue centres. (WR 362/5 - 09.01) e-158 &e-161 |
