Perus
poorest homes receive
Scriptures through O-21
LIMA, Peru When a Christian
radio station announced that the Peruvian Bible
Society (PBS) was providing a free Bible for each home, and gave
details of where to collect them, pastors in remote areas were so excited
that they walked for nine hours to obtain a copy of the Scriptures for
their communities.
The Bibles were provided through an Opportunity
21 project, entitled One Bible for Every Home, aimed
at helping poverty-stricken families find comfort in the Word of God.
Peru is one of the poorest countries in Latin America, and civil unrest
in some parts of the country has led to the displacement of some 600,000
people. Many of them fled to shantytowns on the outskirts of Lima, where
they live in desperate poverty.
More than 22,000 Bibles were distributed
in the early months of this year to families living in remote areas
of Huancavelica Perus poorest province.
To increase the impact of this distribution
on Peruvian society, the PBS also provided Scriptures for other groups.
In this way, 19,000 New Testaments and 45,000 New Reader Portions were
distributed to prisons and hospitals. (WR 361/36 - 7/8.01)
