Opportunity 21 project puts Scriptures into the hands of Argentina’s leaders

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — High-ranking government officials and provincial and municipal authorities have received Scriptures through an Opportunity 21 (O-21) project aimed at providing biblical guidance for the country’s decision-makers and administrators.

Although Argentina has one of the most stable economies in Latin America, high-level corruption is rife and, according to surveys, many Argentinians distrust those in power.

Ethics

The project, entitled, The Bible and Ethics, was completed last year and provided 56,000 Pocket New Testaments for distribution to senior officials and members of the Congress, Senate and Legislature, and 150,000 Portions, entitled Acerca de la Ética (About Ethics), for other government employees.

The distribution, which was carried out by church leaders, Christian organisations and the Argentine Bible Society (ArBS), sparked national interest and was given a high profile by the media.

Guidelines

A television channel broadcast a programme about ethics and morality and offered copies of the Bible Society’s Portion to interested viewers, while newspapers ran stories about the importance of providing ethical guidelines for new government employees.

The ArBS is now developing a similar distribution project to share the Bible’s perspective on ethics and morality with young people, also with funds from O-21. (WR 361/34 - 7/8.01)
