Chechen refugees overjoyed to receive Bible Society Scriptures

VLADIKAVKAZ, North Ossetia, Russia — Scriptures provided by the Bible Society in Russia (BSR) have brought great joy to Chechen refugees sheltering in camps in Ingushetia, according to a report by the North Ossetian Mission (NOM) – a Christian organisation ministering to the refugees.

Refugee children in Bart camp in Karabulak reach eagerly for Scriptures provided by the BSR“Adults became like children the day we gave them Scripture books because for most of them it was the first time that they had received spiritual food,” wrote Peter Lunichkin, NOM Director, in a letter to the BSR. NOM distributed 1,000 Scriptures in three refugee camps near the Chechen border in March.

“Many refugees in Bart camp in Karabulak village now have Christian literature and the most popular are the Bible Society children’s book The Story of Jesus, and Tropinka, a magazine for children published by another mission organisation, Light in the East,” continued Mr Lunichkin. “Those who received The Story of Jesus said that they found it easy to read and that it helped them to learn about Jesus and the Gospel.”

Bart camp is home to more than 6,000 refugees, including nearly 2,400 children. Although the camp has electricity, drinking water and gas, living conditions are cramped and uncomfortable.

“The refugees are living in terrible conditions but they are so open to the Word of God,” said Mr Lunichkin. “In their pain and suffering they are crying out to God to receive his peace in their hearts. We are glad that we have been able to work with the Bible Society to bring them Scriptures but many more are still needed.” (WR 360/5 - 06.01) [PHOTOS] e-145
