First Chinese Handwritten Bible
Raises Funds for Opportunity 21

HONG KONG, PRC — The UBS global expansion program, Opportunity 21, is to receive nearly US$38,500 from a fundraising event organised by the Hong Kong Bible Society (HKBS). More than 300 people took part, producing the world’s first handwritten Chinese Bible. According to the HKBS, the project, which was launched in July, was designed to arouse public interest in the Scriptures and promote Christian unity. The participants, whose ages ranged from 10 to 86, took three months to complete the Bible text and were supported by more than 2,000 donors. The Chinese handwritten Bible was among the Scripture treasures on display at the Bible Exhibition 2000 – an event organised by the HKBS and the Studium Biblicum OFM, attracting 16,000 visitors in November. Thousands Flock to Hong Kong Bible Exhibition

HONG KONG, PRC — More than 16,000 people flocked to a Bible exhibition held in November to celebrate 2,000 years of Christianity. A joint venture by the Hong Kong Bible Society (HKBS) and Studium Biblicum OFM – a Roman Catholic organisation – the exhibition’s theme was Bible 2000: Thy Word, O Lord, Will Last Forever, and traced the role of the Scriptures in human history. The 150 exhibits included photographs of early Bible manuscripts held by the Vatican Library, handkerchief Bibles that were used and copied by Chinese Christians during the Cultural Revolution, and rare 17th-century Chinese Bibles. The exhibition, which ran from November 2-6, also showed the considerable influence of the Bible on architecture, language, law, literature and music. (WR 357/10 - 1/2.01) e-123
