National Award for New Bible
Translation
ENGLAND
& WALES — The British
and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS) has been awarded the 2000th Crystal
Mark award for its use of plain English in its edition of the CEV Bible
entitled Into the Light. "The 2,000th award was originally being
kept for the millennium itself," said Chrissie Maher, Director of the Plain
English Campaign. "But we were so impressed by this Bible and its power
to communicate such a very important message that we are delighted to present
Mark No. 2000 now. Every page is crystal-clear – this is certainly the
Bible to take people into the next century." BFBS’s former Market Development
Executive Kim Alexander welcomed the award in view of the edition’s aim
of reaching those who might not otherwise pick up a Bible. "The news of
this special award is really tremendous," she said, "and confirms that
we are achieving our objective of making the Bible accessible to more people."
The story was also told of a housewife in her thirties who had been given
one of these Bibles by a friend and who became so engrossed that she sat
up until 3:00 one morning reading it. "It’s brilliant; I couldn’t get over
it. I was absolutely amazed because it explained so much. I’ve read loads
of different Bibles but this is the best one I’ve ever read, and no-one
will beat it. It’s easier to understand," she said.
