Students Gather for Bible Battle

MANILA, Philippines — More than 100 students from 41 high schools took part in the second Metro Manila Bible Quiz, held at the University of Santo Tomas in February. Having battled their way through ten elimination rounds and three semi-finals, nine contestants came face to face in the gruelling final round.

The two-hour final of the Quiz was watched by an auditorium full of eager high school students, each rooting for their own classmates. Hosted by two popular radio presenters, the competition was also broadcast on local radio.

It was Lydia W Ng of Grace Christian High School who won the prestigious first prize of a trip to the Holy Land, as well as the honour that comes with such an achievement. The 17-year-old was thrilled at the thought of visiting places that had become so familiar to her through the pages of her Bible.

Sponsored by several large commercial companies, the Metro Manila Bible Quiz was introduced in support of President Fidel Ramos’ Moral Recovery Program two years ago. Its aim is to encourage young people to read the Bible, in the hope that they will discover God’s moral values for themselves.
