OMAN For four consecutive evenings in April, children and young people from across Muscat thronged to the Vacation Bible School, where local volunteers ran a range of interactive activities designed to deepen their knowledge of the Bible. One source of support for this venture was the Bible Society in the Gulf.
The driving force behind Oman's Vacation Bible School events is Child Evangelism Fellowship International, which supplies resources including videos, songs, posters and activity sheets. In addition to these items, those involved in running the latest Bible School, which brought together around 400 children from 20 congregations, were able to use materials from the Bible Society.

Older children received copies of the Youth Bible (Contemporary English Version), which is designed to be easy to read and contains helpful notes, while younger ones received a VCD of a performance by the Just For Kids drama troupe or a DVD of the Jesus film. Reflecting Oman's mix of nationalities and ethnic groups, the DVD offers the Jesus film in eight different languages. The Bible Society's gesture of support for this work was greatly appreciated by the organisers and by its own supporters, two of whom came forward to cover the cost of the gifts.
Each evening, the children and young people participated in a packed programme of Bible studies, talks, films and games. On the final evening their parents joined them in a time of stories, songs and celebration. As the event came to an end, Bible Society Executive Secretary Hrayr Jebejian reflected on its significance. "This is part of the Bible Society's program to encourage the youth to interact with the Scriptures," he writes. "I will appreciate your prayers so that the impact of the Word will be a blessing to the many different nationalities and ethnic groups who received it." (308 words - OMAN.21.04.05)
