CONGO — Songs and prayers of thanksgiving accompanied the opening on March 10 of the Bible Society in Congo's new Pain de Vie ('Bread of Life') bookshop. Up to 15 people at a time will be able to browse the shelves of this facility (pictured right), which is located on the main road leading to Bible House.

Constructed at a cost of almost CFA Fr 1 million (US$ 1,980) – met from generous donations to a publishing fund set up in 2004 – the Society now has a "precious jewel" which is a great improvement on the very small bookshop it replaces, according to Publishing Secretary Nicaise Bahouamio. Representatives of many of the Bible Society's partner organisations, including Full Gospel and SIL, were present at the opening ceremony. The United Bible Societies was represented by Doreen Aluda, Human Resources Consultant from the Area Service Center in Nairobi, Kenya, and Betty Kahasha, PA to David Hammond, the UBS Area Secretary in Lomé, Togo. General Secretary Etienne Diatha thanked the guests for their support and recounted the history of the various buildings the Bible Society has occupied since its formation in the mid-1990s.

After committing the bookshop to God in prayer, the event culminated with Pastor Julien Moumbeti, Vice-Chairman of the Bible Society board, symbolically unlocking its main door. (234 words - CONGO.13.04.05)
