Indonesian Bible Society responds
to Bali bomb attack

JAKARTA, Indonesia — The Indonesian Bible Society (LAI) is undertaking a Scripture distribution program in response to the bomb attack on a nightclub in Kuta, Bali, on October 12 in which, according to latest figures, 184 people were killed and 325 badly injured.

LAI staff visited the site of the tragedy on October 21 to lay flowers in memory of the victims. That evening around 5,000 people attended a special interdenominational prayer and worship event at a Bethel church in Denpasar, Bali, to express their concern about the attack.

In an initiative similar to that of the Bible Society in Australia (see Latest News #218), LAI is now working to make Scriptures available to the survivors and to grieving relatives. It is to distribute 1,040 Bibles and related material via the churches in Bali, and hopes that God’s Word will serve to “strengthen the faith of the grieving victims.”

Looking further into the future, LAI believes that efforts should be made to revive the image of Bali as a safe, peaceful tourist destination. For this reason, it is to hold an international seminar and worship session with the theme Heal the Wounded Heart in Bali on November 29. Participants will include Australian and Indonesian politicians and business leaders. The driving force behind LAI’s response to the attack is the belief that, as an LAI spokesperson said, “God will guide us to rebuild our nation into a better future.” (245 words - INDONESIA.31.10.02)
